Elemeno Health Auditing Feature

Elemeno Health saw a need with a couple of its customers to digitize their existing Auditing systems. This task involved Nurse Auditors shadowing nurses in the hospital to gather data around safety procedures that lead to hospital infections and mistakes. This data is then communicated to the nursing teams and a safety score maintained. The existing systems are modeled on Toyota’s safety system called Kaizen.

My Role

I led the LeanUX process to confirm the needs, understand the existing Kaizen systems and how they differ. I led the team in sketching tasks and built prototypes and validated them with Auditors and Nurses.

Determining what is MVP

Shown here are the wireframes that an previous Product Manager had created. She did a great job at gathering user needs but since only a couple customers were interested in this feature, should we build all of it?

  • What is MVP?
  • How to make it flexible for the Kaizen and nonKaizen use cases?
  • Are the nurses interested in seeing this data in real time in the app?

Learning from experience

This project set off my alarm bells because of what saw go down when I worked as a Lead UX at Teachscape. There, the products were hardwired for a certain process of Teacher Observations causing it to be brittle. We struggled to accommodate customers with different processes and this inability eventually stressed the organization during Back to School season.

So at Elemeno, I wanted to avoid this mistake, I wanted to make sure that the MVP could work for all foreseeable use cases, not just the Kaizen process. I wanted to know that it was built wisely.

We set out to understand how hospitals used, and didn’t use, the Kaizen process.  We dove into user research and things became a lot clearer.

Advocating for Customization:

What I didn’t see in the first Product Manager’s wireframes was customizability of the data display.

My concern for Elemeno: When it comes to high stakes features, such as Auditing, Managers won’t use a feature at all if they can’t control how it will display for their users. By providing Managers with some control in the MVP, Elemeno would have a greater understanding of the value of the feature because Managers will use it.

Admin Configuration of the Auditing Feature:

  • Managers want to control timing of things, such as frequency of display and what days etc
  • Managers want to select what will display and in what order
  • When configuring, Managers want to know what it will look like for their users

User View

Here is what the user sees based on the configurable Admin form from above. There is one thing that is hardwired in this view, and that is the number of audit forms displayed here which is 2. The Admin can determine which ones will display on the homepage, but the rest are under the “View All” call to action in a progressive-display pattern.

This decision was made because 1) I wanted the homepage to still be predictable and clean for the users and 2) I wanted the Manager to prioritize what their nurses needed to know the most.
